As children we obeyed our parents for a variety of reasons. We wanted the smile rather than the scowl, or the sweet candy rather than the sting of being hit - or maybe some of us wanted their scowl out of revenge.

It was the consequences we were drawn towards. Maybe it was the responsible freedom as a teenager rather than being grounded or having to be accountable for all our time.

God asked for our obedience.

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:3-5 Our Father could say the same as our parents did, “It’s for your own good”. At the time we weren’t making great choices and our parents did know what we needed. It is also to glorify God. When our choice is to glorify God the world is more loving and peaceful. We benefit immensely. Our relationships are better, we work better and we find joy in the everyday. We have the privilege to choose obedience and remain deeply connected with our Father in heaven and reap the wonderful consequences that are out of this world!

Women are social beings and love connecting in many different ways. You can find WoMin in the social media of Facebook. Please become a WoMin friend and join our online group. We're striving to reach 300 friends by the end of 2011. Click here to go to the WoMin group.

Dear Darra

We invite you to send in a question that you would like answered by an authentic, qualified Christian. We know you have questions. We’ll provide answers that align with the Bible. Whatever the topic – relationships, friendships, children, theology for example – we’ll find the answers of how a Christian could handle it.

This new service for WoMin will be in the format of an “advice column”, similar to those you see in newspapers and magazines. Questions and answers will appear in upcoming newsletters, on our website, and our WoMin Facebook group.

Please send your question to Dear Darra (Hebrew for Wise) at FABMINT@HOTMAIL.COM. We guarantee your anonymity and confidentiality.

“If any of you needs wisdom to know what you should do, you should ask God, and he will give it to you. God is generous to everyone and doesn't find fault with them.” James 1: 5 (God’s Word translation, 1995)
